Cutting Edge Textiles
We want to be a dynamic group of like minded artists – whether as hobby / fun / or more professional.
So we want our group to be a great group that others would love to join.
Emails / Newsletters
Each month I will send out the newsletter as usual. Please contribute to help this be an inspiring link rather than just a notice board.
Background emails (background, database, meeting notes, technique plan) will be sent out at the beginning and then only if updated.
NEWSLETTER QUESTIONS
If you have any questions about any information in the newsletter, contact the link person if I have given one.
If no link is given please contact me, eg you have a class question - by asking me I can contact the tutor and then send the reply out to everyone. As, if you have a question then others will probably have the same one and will need to know. This also saves the tutor from being inundated with the same email questions. Of course if the tutor is your best friend you can still talk to them J
Car pool
We have members spread around Hamilton and the Waikato, so if transport is an issue or you just want to save petrol – have a look at the members list and see if you can car pool in your area to the meetings. Or contact me for some help with transport.

New members
We want and need to grow the membership.
As we grow we need to be aware of new members,
- that they feel comfortable, especially in a room where everyone else seems to know each other.
- That they get to meet us all and we can all find new friends
- That we can help them know how we do things etc
- That we all share in this friendship, not just the organisers
Money
MEMBERS - $25 sub, paid in Jan or the first class you attend. Sub reduces to $14 from July on. Ask Margherita, If you want to internet bank details
Sub reduces to $14 when joining from July on.
MEETING COSTS - MEMBERS - $5 entrance fee –covers venue, tea/coffee, class notes, any online info/links etc, up to a $2 max class stuff.
If class costs are higher than $2 you will be notified of the extra fee
TUTOR for the day doesn’t pay entrance fee
CASUALS - $15 entrance fee and only get class handouts, not any online etc info. If they join the next month they can pay $15 sub.
Casuals are only able to attend if space allows after all members have replied – eg based on any venue or tutor space limits.
ENTRANCE FEE - The $5 entrance fee is the buffer for venue costs.
Each meeting the total of the entrance fee for the day will be used to
1. Pay the tutor (up to the $2 max per person)
If payment is less than the $2 max, then surplus will be put in bank
2. Buy any replacement drink stuff, when needed
3. Pay for the venue
If the venue is more, then the extra will be paid from the bank account (where the sub is saved for this reason)
If the venue is less than this amount – the surplus will be put in the bank ready for any future payments.
WORKSHOPS with external tutor
Members - pay the cost of the class split between attendees
Non members - pay the same cost + $25
WHY BE A MEMBER
· Get our amazing classes at reduced rates, compared to what you pay to learn elsewhere
· First on the list of outside teachers
· Pay less for external teacher classes
· You can choose to be involved in our exhibitions and events
· Get very supportive feedback and critiquing for your work
· Be in an environment of supportive like minded creators and be inspired for the month.
· Learn amazing new techniques to expand your skill base or master what you already do
· Have the opportunity to teach and share with others what you know
· All class material is accessible – even for past classes.
COMMITMENT of attendees (and why casuals pay a higher fee to attend)
Members are the life blood of the group and without this commitment the group will fold.
Casuals are nice to have join us on the day, but will pay a higher fee to attend, as with no commitment from them to sustain our group, the
money is the only real benefit the group receives.

· Commit to attending as many meetings as you can to support the group
· Share so that meetings are exciting, educational, inspiring and supportive

SAVINGS
These details are in the back of the meeting book – remember you can look anytime at these accounts

FUNDING
We will apply for funding regularly thru the year to help with:
- help set up exciting external tutors
- buying assets to help us eg buying trestle tables if a venue does not supply them but could store them.
- Setting up exhibitions / events etc.
Meeting format
10 am– 3pmish
IDEA - bring a journal for the notes, and write about what you’re doing and your thoughts about the process.
- Bring your camera to record your steps
MEETING ETIQUETTE
Please bring your own mug or share cleaning up and washing dishes.
Also help out with cleaning floors, tables etc and helping teachers take supplies to and from cars.
Always bring (just in case they are needed) - Plastic bags to take wet items home, and plastic sheet to protect your work space and gloves.
START - with a drink and sharing time (unless the teaching requires us to start at 10 – then we will share at lunchtime)
SHARING RULES
Sharing time is a time to show what you are doing and have done previously, challenges and art you need help with.
It doesn’t necessarily need to be what you have done in textile group.
If you are asked questions about your art, feel free to share details.
– this way we all learn and remember you may think what you’ve done is easy to do but if we don’t know and we ask we really want to learn.
If the technique you are asked about would take more than a couple of minutes to show – consider sharing it as a mini class in the future.
Let us know (when you are asked the question) you need more time to properly show the technique and we can organise a time slot for
you at the next meeting you attend.
If you don’t want to show the technique then best not to share the art. You may have a variety of reasons why you can’t share the method.
TEACHING – starts 10.30ish - 1 class per day, starting in the morning – can possible have a DVD class in the afternoon if class is a short one.
TEACHING TIME in the morning is the intense learning time.
We want to have fun but also remember to listen to the teacher as a first priority.
And be aware if some people need quite and concentration to achieve their work.
As the teaching part finishes then relax more, share more, bring along any unfinished work to finish, move around and sit with someone new,
get to know someone new.
12ish LUNCH BREAK – bring your own food – some venues may have food shops close by, some may have nothing available, so come prepared.
ADMIN. After food, if needed. This meeting is for sorting any plans or admin stuff. Let me know if you would like to discuss anything.
1ish - when lunch/meeting finished - Finish any teaching, finish the class projects, try expanding the technique
ALL ATTENDEES important that you let me know if you are attending, after receiving the newsletter
Classes - contact Margherita re what you want to teach and when.
There are many ways of sharing in this group 1 of them being teaching classes.
There is also bringing in new members, venue and exhibition information, contacts for our needs eg supplies,
TEACHING GUIDLELINES
The class can be something you know about or something you want to try
You don’t need to be an expert –
Trialling a new technique can also help share the costs as usually buying the supplies can be a high cost and you only need a little, so
this way you can share the cost with the other members.
It will be great if you have handouts for the class or at least some background info you can pass to me so I can put on the email class notes
page.
Class notes just in black and white images and the email page version can have the colour and can be:
- photocopies of the notes you have gained from books or other classes – YOU MUST reference where you took the copies from
- or your own notes and pictures (take photos as you make the sample piece/s)
When you are ready to teach, please send, at the beginning of the month, to Margherita:
- A name for your class
- A brief idea of what it’s all about if not obvious by it’s name (you can include images if you want)
- List of supplies required by the members
- What you will be providing eg notes etc. Please provide only what most students wont have or what is just easier for you to bring eg 1
pot of black paint for everyone to share, as only a little bit needed and silly for everyone to bring their own.
- What you provide, let me know the cost per student. We don’t pay tutor fees but compensate you for any costs you may have.
TECHNIQUES - see “techniques email”, for year’s plan and potential classes and wanted list.
TECHNIQUE ETIQUETTE
Most of us have tried many techniques to varying levels and all of us are interested in learning as much as we can.
Teaching and sharing is how we learn
If a class is a technique you have already tried, to whatever level, then feel free to bring along work you have done to share with the group.
This may be the situation with most classes, that some members will have already done the technique and we want to encourage you to bring
your relevant work along as well .. this helps extend our knowledge.
But please wait till after the class is finished before showing your work or talk to the tutor to see when would be a good time to share it.
This means we can all learn extra but it allows the teacher to keep a flow to their class and not lose their train of thought.
Exhibiting / events / marketing / funding group
An internal group, who are interested in exhibiting, marketing and selling their art in a more professional way.
The members interested in this part of the group can be at any level
eg exhibit if they have time, all the way thru to “How do I become a full time artist”
Members need to be committed to their level of involvement. Talk to Margherita if wanting to be involved.
There are many techniques and much information out there on how to market / display and sell art, it’s just a matter of us learning it.
We will learn:
how to take good art photos, and store them gallery ready eg proper labels, sizes etc
this includes storing them on computers, resizing ready for sending, attaching to email, downloading etc.
Write required artist info eg cv, statement etc
How to apply for exhibitions
This includes finishing the above steps so we have a library of art ready for filling in applications
Pictures, how to store and email
Feel free to contact Margherita (824 7638) if you need any more help as each computer and photo program can be different
Some of you are new to taking photos and emailing them so here are a few steps.
STORE. After taking your photos, load them onto your computer.
In your photo program, (usually what came with your camera) create a folder with the date and name of the class eg feb 2014 altered books.
I assume you already have a folder for Cutting Edge Textiles – otherwise create it first and then inside this folder create the date and class
name folder.
RESIZE. This changes the average image from a 3mg size down to approx 100kb
Open “my computer” (this is where your libraries and C drive etc are listed)
Open “My pictures” and find the folder where you have the images stored.
Click on the image you want to resize
– by holding down CTRL key you can click to select more than 1 image, if they are not consecutively listed
– by holding down SHIFT key you can click to select more than 1 image, if they are consecutively listed
– Click on first image and then last image and all images in between will also be selected
Right click and drop down menu will have a “resize”, select that and choose “small or med”
The resized image may show at the end of your folders list of images but will eventually be stored next to the original.
Don’t delete the original as this remains your high quality image ready for any future changes.
YOU CAN NOT UP SIZE AN IMAGE.
The resized image is what you choose when emailing.
RESIZE PROGRAM. When you right click if “resize” does not show as an option you can download it for free. They are all perfectly save and a
google search will give you many choices. Search in google with your computers windows version eg XP or 7 etc. If you don’t know your version then just load any version and if it doesn’t work, uninstall and load the next version. They are very fast downloads.
I use Image Resizer Powertoy. For windows 7 http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/releases/view/30247
